Week 1.1
Diagram showing the hierarchy of the roads that are directly adjacent to my site. Also, an attempt at designating possible approaches to the school. I got a below-ground service drive, ground level main entry and drop-off and student and faculty access drive that will connect to the building's 24/7 secure entry.

Week 1
I am currently working on an ideas competition for a Canadian architecture school. The site in Sudbury strikes me as currently being isolated but surrounded by many hidden opportunities for development. The current site, near the downtown, was chosen based on the preliminary assessment of the Sudbury Master Plan (updated in September 2008) goals for the city. Amongst the main points pertaining to an architecture school, I thought it would be most important to focus on possible connections to artery roads and the opportunities it would provide for the visibility of the school, the strengthening of the creative district of the city and a proximity to the water front with the possibility of lodging (for tourists, students and their families), bolstering future boom in the hospitality industry.
The image below illustrates the preliminary advantages of the site:
The connection to downtown can provide a landscape-based solution to the existing street pattern. Right now I am thinking of the architecture building as being a series of different structures with a green carpet being a unifying element and a gathering space for the students:
